Could they possibly do the research online to create their newsletter?
Presenter: Gallman & Robinson Unit: Families 3 Positives: I like the idea of using the venn diagram for comparing and contrasting. I know they will enjoy having their work displayed. Great idea to tie in the ELA standards! 2 Key Points: PowerPoint - student’s life as a timeline Rubric – for assessment 1 Suggestion: You might need to give lots of examples of simple ideas for their timelines since some may not have taken big trips to include.
Presenter: Sadler Unit: All in a Days Work 3 Positives: Giving suggestions for employment skills is a great idea. Great idea, creating a blog for people to stay connected. I like the idea of bringing in HR people from business. 2 Key Points: Flyer of soft skills to be put together in an employment handbook. Rubric of soft skills from Career Center 1 Suggestion: You might work with OneStop, Roper, and Gallman as well as the businesses.
Presenter: Sontag Unit: Series of Unfortunate Events 3 Positives: This is a great series of stories. The kids love these books and the way you are using them. Good idea of embedding blogging in the unit. The kids will be more self-directed by using the checklist. 2 Key Points: PowerPoint about figurative language Self-Direction Checklist Blog & PowerPoint Rubric 1 Suggestion: Work with the technology teacher to help the students with their PowerPoint projects.
Presenter: Fulmer Unit: The Hero’s Journey 3 Positives: Teens need a way to develop their own identities. They need good examples. This is a great project for your ESOL kids. Including the family in their collaborative projects is a great idea! 2 Key Points: Personal Hero’s Journey Presentation Rubric & Personal Journals 1 Suggestion: Consider having the students present their stories to younger ESOL stories. I think it would give them a sense of leadership.

I like the idea of showing them that the White House is making a change in their eating habits. Hands on activities are a great way to get the interest of the students. 2 Key Points: Storyboard Presentation to be used as a PSA Checklist for Assessment 1 Suggestion: Could they create sample healthy menu items for a recipe book?

I like the idea of including parents and community members in the presentations of learning. This is a very comprehensive unit. 2 Key Points: Presentation Rubric 1 Suggestion: Will the different classes have a chance to present to each other?
Presenter: Charette Unit: Simple Machines 3 Positives: The students will love using the interactive websites. It helps give them that hands-on feeling. There are lots of opportunities for assessments and student reflections. This is a great way to tie in lots of technology skills, not just typing, copying, and pasting. 2 Key Points: PowerPoint Rubric for the PowerPoint 1 Suggestion: Is there an opportunity for students to work with real items or is it only websites?

Sharing projects with people at the nursing homes is a great idea. 2 Key Points: Newsletter Rubric from RubiStar 1 Suggestion: You could create a website with the information about the heroes of the community.

Thanks for the suggestions. Each of them were things I had not thought about. Somehow I am going to include each of the suggestions when I do this unit next year. I hope I am able to keep each of you informed on how the unit activity went. Again, thanks.
