Module 3 Reflection

This module has helped me think about the impact of the Internet on my students' learning in the following ways...

  1. I now see how student could get "turned on" to using these communication tools for projects or homework assignments. They are already using them for enjoyment. 21st century educators should now use them for real classroom purposes.

  2. I think I fell into the category of teacher who viewed the internet as an amazing tool for research and for typing, but the communication side of things was isolated to being personal/entertainment. (Or maybe I was just afraid of how to properly monitor it to be sure that my students were utilizing it appropriately.) Through this module, I realize that I need to fully incorporate these two sides in my classroom to be a quality 21st century teacher.

  3. In reflecting on module 3 I've come to realize that being a 21st century teacher is the absolute coolest! Students are already coming to us with so many experiences in a technology based world. Technology has totally evolved into something new; Skyping, Facebooking, multimedia... none of these things are unfamiliar to our students. I'm constanly learning from them! It is my job to develop plans that allow some of these technologies to be "legally" incorporated into my plans.

  4. I do not need to be so shy and timid when it comes to my students and the internet. As long as I am there to monitor it will be okay. Blogging would be a great way to get students activly engaged in a Book Talk or discussion of a specific topic taught in class. This is also a fun and engaging way for different classes and even schools to interact and engage studnets in learning.

  5. Backwards planning is one thing I need to keep in mind as I plan. Also, I need to keep in mind how much "technology" students use. One thing I am noticing in the classroom is that students are not as familiar with computer/Internet technologies as they are with cell phone technologies. Although the various ways students can communicate via the Internet should engage them, they must be taught the skills to use them effectively and proficiently.

I can understand the need to block certain websites, such as Facebook, but I think in some respects, we are doing the students a disservice because we are not teaching them etiquette and ethics related to the technologies.

Using technology as a tool for engagement, though, should not replace students' mastery of the content and standards we hope they will learn. The trick will be to balance the novelty of technology with its value as a teaching tool.

  6. Wow, so many new things to learn about. If I want my students to be ready for the future, I need to help them now. I am excited to help my students use the internet for more than exploring learning games. I can see how we could e-mail or chat with authors or community leaders. I look forward to this challenge which will enhance my student's learning.

  7. This module really helped me the past two weeks as I was implementing a class wiki into my classroom. I had students post poems that they were working on to the wiki, and I was able to get them to be more interactive by providing feedback to each other. Of course their first question was, "What is feedback?" Turns out that this was not so easy to explain to 6th graders! I was able to use some of the suggestions from the module to get the students more engaged into providing useful feedback to each other.

  8. Just when I think I have my students doing things that are on the cutting edge of technology, I find a gold mine like this Intel class. I cannot wait to implememnt some of this when school begins next year. I am sure that my students this year still have time to reap some of the benefits as well. Module 3 was a real eye-opener as to how limited I have been in using the Internet to most benefit my students.

  9. Technology is moving and grooving everyday. Students come to you today technology driven and I am the one that need to get over my fears or whims. Module 3 is a piece that helps you to be aware of the “what ifs.” This course is exciting.

  10. Great thoughts! I can tell the technology-integrated strategies and copyright information are helpful. Please continue to use the strategies and support documents in the INTEL curriculum as you continue planning.

  11. This module has helped me think about the impact of the Internet on my students' learning in the following ways... This module gave important information about copyright laws and information especially for teachers using multilmedia, etc. in the classroom. The chart: Comparison of Online Communication Resources could be made into a survey of what students may want to do to communicate information in the classroom. This could help the teacher to make different kinds of assessments. ONe of the most important things to remember when using the Internet is to find reliabe sites, safe sites for collaberation and research.
